Bahasa dan pendidikan bahasa dalam konteks pembinaan tamadun dan masyarakat madani
Abstract
This article focuses on the role of language and language education in the development of a civilization and a civil society. Discussion is based on the Islamic philosophical point of view. Certain aspects have been emphasized, particularly on the role of language and language education as the basis of mankind's existence. The term "rational animal" given to mankind refers to the role of language as well as mind in the realization of the concept of the real self, and their existence becomes a prerequisite in the process of developing a civilization. The second aspect emphasized in this article is the role of language as a means of knowledge acquisition and dissemination, as is clearly illustrated in verse 31, Surah al-Baqarah in the Qur 'an, regarding the fact of Prophet Adam was given by God the name of all things in the world. Thus, the process of language learning and teaching as an effort to master the language is very much connected to the process of knowledge acquistion and dissemination, especially through the implementation of the language across the curriculum program. In relation to the two issues, the idea of the islamization of knowledge, including linguistics has been discussed. The idea is to adopt Islamic worldview or weltanschauung in order to get the right perception of the reality of language and its role in the development of a civilization and a civil society.
