Abstract

This paper attempts to describe and explain the phonology of opacity in closed syllable rhyme in Kelantan dialect which has not been adequately explained. The present study adopts the theory of sympathy, set within the constraint-based approach of optimality theory. The phonology of Kelantan dialect shows that the low vowel /a/ followed by [h, 2] in closed syllable rhyme surfaces as [a]. For instance, words like "bah (flood)" and "sesak (crowded)" are realised as [bah] and [sown Opacity arises when there are forms that do not in agreement with this generalisation. For axamples, words such as "bas (bus)" and "sesat (lost)" surface as [bah] and [sosa7]. This paper suggests that the modification of low vowel /a/ in closed syllable rhyme is motivated by *alc] constraint which disallows the low vowel /a/ to occur in that environment. The price for satisfying this constraint instigates an opacity effect in the dialect. In the previous analysis, the phonological behaviour of opacity is accounted for by having an intermediate representation, a structure which cannot be seen either in the underlying or surface representations. In the current analysis, sympathetic candidate and constraint are used to substitute the concept of intermediate representation. Accordingly, the phonology of opacity in closed syllable rhyme in Kelantan dialect can be accounted for adequately.
