Additional Implicit Meanings in Sport Match Results Reports

(Makna Tambahan dalam Penyataan Keputusan Perlawanan Sukan secara Implisit)

Abstract

This research seeks to explain the implicit meanings in the reports of English Premier League match results. The implied meanings of expressions such as membelasah (wallop), benam (bury), menjinakkan (tame), tersungkur (stumble), dikejutkan(shock) and tumbang (fall) require interpretation of meaning based on context. Therefore, this study applies the relevance theory of Sperber and Wilson (1986, 1995) to focus on context, cognitive effects and the processing of match results data containing these implicit expressions. The data was obtained from sports reports published in Berita Harian Online. The analysis of the data shows that pragmatic analysis of the expressions, that is, taking into consideration the context, reveals their additional meanings, which are difficult to discern when merely looking at them superficially.
