The Performance Development and Changes of the Structure in Traditional Gendang Melayu Sarawak

Abstract

Gendang Melayu Sarawak is one of the Sarawakian Malay art perfomance tradition. The Malay society in Sarawak has made this activity as an entertainment especially during social gatherings. This development has evolved since the coming of Islam in the Island of Borneo. This research aims to study the changes in the development of the tradition. The changes includes the changes in the tradition of performance structure against time. In order for this tradition to live on within the community, the tradition of performance has been passed on from generation to generation. The research method used to find datas are through interviews and participant observation. This research is also conducted diacronically and syncronically where by descriptive analysis is used to discuss in details of the changes that has taken effect on the performance tradition of the Sarawak Malay society. The research findings will provide information and understanding of the performance tradition of the Gendang Melayu Sarawak .
